Retro Cook Off - Sausage Puff mmm!!

The lovely Kylie at Lucy Violet Vintage and Donna at Hung Up On Retro are hosting a wonderful Retro Cook Off today and I am more than pleased to present this baked Sausage Puff dish by Mc.Alpins test kitchen as my contribution....

Warning: not for the squeamish!

I think of this retro culinary gem as a great way eliminate the hassle of hot dog and bun situation... here you simply set sausage into the bread and cook as one, then simply top with mustard and tomato sauce and you are done ;-)!!!. Truth be told the recipe calls for tinned cocktail franks but I couldn't bring myself to buy them, instead I used Chipolata's hoping the dish may actually be eaten at some stage today!.

what can I say.... this is the before shot!

and after

Bon Appetite.... if you're game!

  3. How hilarious! Your dish is definitely in the ugly category with Donna's and mine. Try as I might, when I look at your sausage, I can't quit thinking about those tiny rolls of plastic bags that you take to the dog park. ;)

    1. Ha ha yes I am glad someone enjoyed the garnish - bistro chic is so on the money.... I was totally channelling The Swagman a Melbourne retro culinary icon for all the wrong reasons buffet, cabaret you get the picture!.
I've come home to find the bread eaten and the sausages left on the board so, yep, I think that says it all!!

    2. OMG! My husband used to go to The Swagman when he stayed with his Grandparents on Boarders Weekends! I actually saw it before it burnt down, but sadly never had the 'pleasure' of dining there myself!

  8. Very attractive presentation! It looks pretty edible but all those big sausages fanned out are kind of bizarre. That is the charm of it, don't you think. I joined the party late and just put my entry up. Your food styling is magnificent!

    1. So economical that when it sits uneaten gathering mould you can then grow some blue cheese... this is the kind of dish that just keeps giving and giving!!!.

  15. I'd eat it, definitely! Especially as you've used real sausages instead of those tinned aberrations. I reckon the kids would go for it too. My attempt was truly disgusting looking and not much better tasting!

    1. ;-) thanks Lea, love your salad, we used to make this as a dessert, that I have always known as "Heavenly Hash" (my mums good friend has always made it along with trifles and sponges etc) but with the addition of some whipped cream as well, I've not yet had it served with savouries... interesting.

    2. oh and just to add the sausage puff was super easy... it's basically just a seasoned bread or scone base with sausages pressed in and baked!... I too like the simple and quick thing... this was mixed, baked, photographed and posted to the blog in an hour and a bit total.
