Vintage Vignettes - the look of love!

Thought I'd share some vintage looks with you today... mainly things I've pinned over the last few days or weeks. I am really mad for bright pink and teal at the moment, I know these colours are everywhere but they just seem to make me smile no matter how man times I see them represented in home wares and apparel. Now that the weather is heating up a bit I'm ready to ditch the winter pallet and embrace the sun - I'm thinking cut flowers and some new cushion covers would do the trick....

Vintage Style Cockatoo Lamps - Kitsch Australiana

After mentioning my recent search for a vintage Yellow Crested Cockatoo figurine I was reminded of my love of Cockatoo lamp bases. You may have seen them featured in magazines over the years or perhaps you are lucky enough to own one... either way they are kitsch as kitsch can be and I love the vintage Australiana feel they give to an interior.

Vintage Finds - Thrifting Time Again

Thought I'd share a few vintage finds today

Last week I came across this small mannequin in a local thrift store and had to buy it. It is such an unusual little item and was all of $2.

I purchased this vintage budgerigar figurine on Ebay for $8 and had it sent from the U.S. At the time I was on the hunt for a larger vintage yellow crested cockatoo figurine and settled on this sweet little item instead.

I found this item at a garage sale in Kew for $2, at the time I had no idea what it was but I liked the jewel like lozenges on the stand and the marble base so I just bought it. I later discovered it was a lamp base and will have it wired and put to use very soon.

Another Ebay purchase this fabric Keep Calm & Carry On sign was sent from the UK and was produced by the book store that discovered the original 1939 wartime poster. A bargain at 3 pounds.

I don't often buy vintage fabric but I had to have this fat quarter of geometric seersucker. 

Speaking of vintage yellow crested cockatoos - Perch New Orleans has this one.

Loving the Eiffel light too! What a great image.

The Tote Mumbai - Where Plantation Style Meets Danish Deluxe!!

My husband and I visited India in 2006 for about a month. From that visit we knew we would return again and The Tote, Mumbai will definitely be on my must see list. With a nod to Danish style and some amazing steel beam plantation style tree sculptures throughout, this resturant/bar set within the grounds of the Mumbai Racecourse, is one to see.

From unused colonial buildings Serie architects have transformed these spaces into contemporary stylish spaces capturing the essence of modern India - I am there!.

Vintage Garden Stool Make Over - DIY High Gloss White Wash

Do you ever get bored with your interior style? You know when you look around your home and think you want to turf it all and start again - I do and Pinterest is no help, teasing me with amazing images day after day.

Sadly I don't have an endless budget nor enough storage space to house a variety of furniture items to change around at will. So to get my fix rather than buying more I find changing the colour of my existing items fixes my fancy!. The victims this week were my vintage garden stools, each receiving a coat of deep gloss white paint.... the result was exactly what I was after, something fresh and airy to kick off spring!.

Thinking I am going to paint my metal letterpress cabinet white as well ... I like the look of rustic matte white painted surfaces mixed with aged wood ... currently I'm trying convince my husband that we should paint our vintage industrial TV cabinet as well - it's red and large, the room is not and I'm not sure how I feel about red feature items at the moment??? I love a touch of red but this red really takes over!!!!

Ideally I would love an unusual Danish credenza, something really tricky with some lattice like decoration on the front of the drawers but the beauty of our current cabinet is that is holds everything and anything the storage benefits are endless.

I did love the retro colours here but I just had to have a change... the varnished colours are still intact underneath should I need to strip them back to their former green mustard tones.

I painted two coats of deep gloss on one stool and one coat on the other as it started to crack a bit even after 48 hours drying time between coats. All up the stools took 4 days to dry.

Retro Living - random vintage items from a Melbourne home

A few years ago my sister and myself visited the estate of a friend's parents to share our opinions on the items that should be considered for Auction. I was there to look at the artwork and she the smalls, this was the home of a retired couple in the inner suburbs of Melbourne.

The closets were filled with Chanel mixed with lary oversized 80's knits and sequin spandex bodysuits - it was fabulous!. Nothing had been thrown out or replaced the couple had simply mixed in modern pieces with others they had collected from the 60's, 70's and 80's.

One of my favourite items was this hide rug

and this vintage Wassilli chair, one of a pair that sat in the top floor sun room

and this retro pressed metal artwork, it was huge and fabulous!.

The study had vintage artichoke lights and a gorgeous tribal art collection

Great style and quality items never fade... here's to collecting items that will be admired and loved 40 years later!.

Weekend Thrifting Fun - Vintage Opp Shop Finds Owls and Chevron Knitted Blanket

Thrilled with my little vintage finds this weekend and had to share... The Melbourne suburb of Mont Albert provided some thrift store magic and the total spend was $5!!! My loose change bought a pair of owl salt and pepper shakers and a knitted chevron pattern rug.

Love a vintage bargain!

Pajaki Polish Paper Chandeliers - my holiday have to make craft DIY party house decoration!

Between Pajaki Chandeliers and the Bamileke Headdress I'm certainly extending my home decor vocab at the moment!.

I stumbled across these amazing Polish paper chandeliers on pinterest yesterday. Pajaki Chandeliers are made to brighten the homes in and surrounding Lowicz. Finger on the pulse crafter's have been loving these babies for years.... I'm a bit slow on the uptake!

This is exactly the kind of decoration I was looking for and with the festive season only weeks away I can't wait to make a few. Thinking it will be great for our Christmas cocktail party hanging outside from fishing line - hoping Melbourne's weather will be hot and sunny!.

Just ordered my tissue paper on Ebay... as soon as it arrives I'm going to Pajaki like it's 1999!. Will post a tutorial when complete. Here are some amazing examples I am loving....

P.S I'm going to cheat a little and make tissue pom pom flowers - they are easy and I can whip out a few in a short time (see my tissue pom pom vines post, located under the DIY tab, for a quick tutorial).
